Old Topo Maps still avilable

Post by ouachita hiker on Fri Apr 16, 2010 11:19 am

For those that don't hike on trails I have been in contact with the district archeologist for the Mena District of the FS
about old topo maps that would possibly show old roads that could be hiked. This all started with the discussion
of hiking old road traces in the Caney Creek Wilderness. For instance I can remember finding old mining tools on hikes
back in the 70's in the Caney Creek Wilderness area but now I don't have any idea were I was, had to be old road back
to the mine. Any way I have received today how to order old maps in Arkansas and also Oklahoma. This isn't a web link
but something I would have to copy and mail to you. Depending on the area it could date back to the early 1900's or earlier.
Some places don't have available early maps. This is from a book:
"Map Index to Topographic Quadrangles of the United States, 1882 - 1940" by Riley Moore Moffat map librarian BYU.

If you plan on hiking with us on the Short Creek Hike on the 24th I will have it with me.

I would like to add that most of the Arkansas maps are 15", don't know how much this will help.

I would love to have any possible information regarding certain topos if available!
It so funny because when I speak to people at various stations, they just point me towards the current FS topos and then become nonreactive...
Anyways, this is rather exciting to hear!

Not all areas of the state are covered. Seems like the Ozarks and the Ouachitas are fairly well covered but not all.
As luck would have it I left the info on my desk at school. If you are interested PM me with your address and I will copy
the info next week and mail it to you.

What is involved is that if the map you want is available you have to call a FS guy in VA. He will copy it and
send it to you from a master list from the book title that I originally posted.

Wow!
This is probably the best news, mapping wise, that I've heard in the last year.
I've been trying to track down old road traces in the Ponca Wilderness Area and the Upper Buffalo Wilderness Area with a little success.
I'll shoot you my info right quick - now about the possibilities of acquiring this book!

Some info on the book here. From what I have found in my search online the book is out of print. And another listing with the
University of Georgia
