Hiker/photog Ed Cooley injuried at twin falls

Post by Figg on Thu Oct 22, 2009 11:47 pm

And update on the rescue mission from Twin Falls that happened Monday, last night, and on into the next morning. I've only heard this from several different sources and not directly from Ed Cooley so some of these facts may be askew, but this is what we've heard. Ed Cooley fell off of the top or near the top of one of the waterfalls at Twin Falls, and landed in the water below, braking his pelvis and some part of his leg/ankle. He managed to activate the 911 button on his FindMeSpot device, which got a search and rescue mission going to come and get him. When the first team reached him SIX HOURS LATER, he remained in the water where he had fallen - not in very good shape - the water was rather cold. That was at about 8pm last night. It took them until 8am this morning to get him out to a road. He is OK, is obviously in the hospital, and will be for a while. This is just a giant reminder of how fragile life is and how dangerous it can be out in the woods - well actually it can be dangerous no matter where you happen to be, but when you are out there all alone a mishap like this can be really bad. If not for Ed's FindMeSpot he probably would never have survived.

Another thread

http://www.arkansasbackcountry.com/backcountry-tales-f3/search-and-rescue-on-the-devils-fork-t798.htm#6304

has a link to the Ar canoe club board. Lots of info there including a post from Ed himself. Good stuff. Something all need to consider. I get silly looks from my kid when i tell him, I can't carry you out of here.

Ed tells about standing where he thought was perfectly safe when.......

From Ed Cooley himself, copied from the Arkansas Canoe Club forums page:

I can't add much to this discussion as things are mostly accurate.

What I would like to add is my undying gratitude for all the brave men
women who would simply not give up on me. You think you are
carefull but unexpected will stll happen.

I was standing on the bank above the falls enjoying the view and
contemplating how to shoot such a wonderful location when the
ground under me gave way.

I tumbled backwards 25 feet or so and landed on my back partially
in the water. This happened at 2pm and i did blackout. A cut on
my head sent blood over both eyes. Since i couldn't read i pressed
all the help buttons.

The
rescue crew arrived at 9pm and it took 12 grueling hours for my rescue
crew to haul me out to where a helicopter airlifted me to fayetteville
regional medical.

My son in law has written a post on his blog with more details.

http://www.traviswilliams.net/twin-fall ... e-details/

I cannot thank my rescuers enough, you can't imagine the horror
of watching nightfall come when you know you won't survive. That
emotion was totally eclipsed by the friendly voices of the forestry service
rescue party.
experience was totally eclipsed by that first flashlight shining through
my raincoat hood and hearing the friendly voices of the forest

Reading that seals the deal for me. I won't solo hike again with a SPOT device.

Chili,

On the Spot website they say that they are available at a reduced price of $99.95 now. For the heck of it I checked out REI's web site and they have it for around $50.00 more. Don't know what the monthy fee is. I am thinking about also looking into one.
