Why did the USA support the IRA against Britain?

Post by Roads007 on Fri Mar 25, 2011 1:26 pm

Why did the USA support the IRA in launching terrorist attacks against their closest ally - Britain? Especially during the Cold War when America needed all the friends it could get, why was America trying to weaken it's ally by supporting terrorists who wanted to establish a communist Irish state that included Northern Ireland, which has a majority Protestant British population and is part of the UK? So why did they betray Britain like this?
